If you're planning a Sikh wedding in Toronto or the Greater Toronto Area, you already know how layered, emotional and beautifully complex these celebrations are. As a wedding photographer based in Toronto who has documented Sikh and multicultural weddings across the GTA, from Brampton to Mississauga and Vaughan to Scarborough, I want to give you an honest, inside look at what these celebrations involve and how I photograph them.
The Multi-Day Nature of a Sikh Wedding
A Sikh wedding is rarely a single-day event. Most couples I work with in Toronto and Brampton have three to five days of celebrations, including:
- Chunni Ceremony: the formal engagement and blessing
- Mehndi Night: henna, music and dancing
- Sangeet: a full evening of performances and family celebration
- Anand Karaj: the sacred Sikh wedding ceremony, held at the Gurdwara
- Reception: the grand celebration, often at a banquet hall in Mississauga, Brampton or Toronto
The Anand Karaj, the Heart of the Day
The Anand Karaj is the Sikh wedding ceremony, typically held at a Gurdwara in the early morning. Having grown up around these ceremonies, I understand the reverence required inside the Gurdwara. I cover my head, move quietly and never interrupt a sacred moment.
The four Lavaan, the ceremonial walks around the Guru Granth Sahib, are the most important moments of the entire wedding. I position myself to capture both the couple and the emotion on the faces of the family members witnessing them.
The Baraat: Controlled Chaos at Its Best
The Baraat, the groom's arrival, is pure energy. Dancing relatives, dhol players, flower petals and a groom on a horse or in a decorated car. I've learned to anticipate that chaos and move within it, so the energy comes through in the photos without anyone feeling directed.
The Doli: The Goodbye That Moves Everyone
The Doli, when the bride leaves her family home, is one of the most emotionally charged moments of any South Asian wedding. I keep my distance and use a longer lens so the family never feels a camera in their face. The images from this moment are always the ones couples tell me they cry over years later.
